Case Study: TravelR

Revolutionizing Online Travel Booking

Ever wanted a travel booking experience that is fast, easy, and completely customizable all at the tips of your fingers?

Yeah, us too.

TravelR is here to fill those needed gaps within the online travel booking system. I was apart of the student venture project to design a platform that would revolutionize one of the largest markets in the world: travel.

Design For A TravelR Mind

TravelR is a mobile experience platform that allow users to input specific criteria of their travel plan (Where you want to go, How much you want to spend, Who you’re going with, What you want to do) and create a customizable, and shareable travel plan. The application will include categories and filters in order to differentiate the needs of each customer and the type of experience they want to obtain through their vacation. It will also allow users to coordinate easily with other travelers and include sharing costs of certain parts of the trip. This will allow users to plan their trip effortlessly, give them the ability to split travel costs, and explore new places they have never been without having to worry about the stress of traditional travel planning.

TravelR Driven

TravelR is for anyone would wants to explore new destinations at the tips of their fingers that is easy to plan, book, and view all in one place.

But easier said than done. Collecting user research was an integral part to the project for understanding where we could take TravelR. Through extensive research, 50 customer interviews and 300 survey responses, we identified our users pain points concluding the goals of the platform.

Our high level goals were to:

  1. Customize. Provide unique experiences for a given destination.

  2. Share. Coordinate itineraries with other travelers, easily.

  3. Cost. Budget and manage costs for a trip.

My TravelR Role

I led the design for the project that started in January 2018 collaborating with the TravelR executive team. Since the project was founded by a student group of seniors at the University of Colorado at Boulder, I was the only designer on the team giving me full responsibility on the design decisions of the project.

My involvement with the project will end May 2018 when user research, designs and prototyping are complete and technical development has begun.

TravelRs Users

In order to find TravelR’s segmentation, we used primary research to identify trends and commonalities between potential customers. We surveyed over 300 people across all ages in the United States and asked them several questions pertaining to how people plan a trip. From this analysis we have identified three main segments:

TravelR Experience Diagrams and Sketches

Three primary questions informed my design strategy:

  1. How do you design for everyone, everywhere?

  2. What contexts need to be considered?

  3. What’s the perfect planning experience?

Early on, it was important to understand the different factors that may influence a travelers online experience. I mapped all the possible concepts and translated this into a situations framework that diagrams different contexts through the program. Overall, extracting primary goals of the system and how each actions may be categorized.
