‘Desert Goddess’ is an excerpt from the award winning documentary Damnation that explores the adventures of the infamous Glen Canyon when the dam was approved. It was summer of 1956, a group of archeologists were tasked with what is known as an ‘unromantic term’ where the sole purpose of a job was to document cultural treasures before an area is flooded: salvage. In the group was a women known for her enchanting looks and loud mouth, a folk singer turned hollywood starlet turned environmental activist Katie Lee would soon become the Desert Goddess. Ever since this film came out in ‘14, specifically this excerpt, the beauty and truth spoken resonated with me and Lee’s words would become a textual representation of what I feel in those far out places that few get to explore.
Her words capture a sort of a movement that puts a dazzle in your eyes. For the kinetic project, I want to enhance the motion through this devine visual that far too many will never know about. Create a sort a nostalgia through the typography and form while expressing a deep love for what was probably one of the most culturally beautiful lands in the US. To express the movement that I want, nothing will be abrupt. It will be executed with ease like a dancing water lily as if it were floating on top of a still river. But I also want the text to flow like a river, dashing through the crevasse of sun kissed rocks just like the colorado did so many years ago to Glen Canyon. This movement will be expressed in a possible linear motion with a swirl similar to the eddies. I also want to create this sort of static in the typography as if it were being heard over an old radio hundred of years from now to truly show the nostalgic emotions in the words. In order to get the feeling of the text, the typography will be soft but playful just like Lee’s words. With words flowing in and out, I need to keep variation simple so one typeface will be used in the creation with little different in weight and size. Some important words will stick out but it will be in a subtle purposeful way.
