Capstone Prototypes Part 1

Objective: We will work through 3 different prototypes that explores Role, Look/Feel, and Implementation for our capstone idea.

Role

We chose Brad Werner to be one of our mentors for our project. He teaches a Business Planning course consisting of a mix of engineering and business students, and offered us the opportunity to pitch our concept to his class. During the pitch we asked the audience to consider and respond to these three questions:

  1. Would you attend this if you were invited?

  2. What do you like/dislike about going to networking events? Dislike?

  3. Do you have any further feedback for us?

We sorted through the surveys, and were able to pick out specific pain points from the feedback. By identifying challenges and desires, we were able to create an initial persona for our user demographic.

Look/Feel

For Look and Feel, we created a moodboard for an example event. We prototyped with a rustic, darker space that was emits a friendly vibe to the participants. This prototype allowed us to get a feel for the type of environment we would like to implement, and showed us the wide variety of decisions that will need to be made regarding space, location, and amenities.

Implementation

For our implementation prototype, we wanted to create a sample challenge for users to interact with. For this example, we wanted to play along with the elusiveness of the brand that we are trying to create. One of the challenges we came up with is called “Interpretation”, and goes as follows:

Users are directed to go to their tables, and will find a box along with a set of instructions. The box will contain a set of materials that users will then use following the instructions given to them. Each group will have their own interpretation of the instructions and materials given to them, and incorporate their own solution.

Example Activity

Instructions: You will be creating an object to be used underwater.

Materials:

  • Cardboard

  • Pen

  • Paper

  • String

  • Glue stick

  • Pipe Cleaners

  • Cotton Balls

  • Post its

After 30 minutes, teams will be given a modifier. This will be another set of instructions along with a disposable camera. Instructions are as followed:

  1. Give your object a name.

  2. Come up with a short product description of the object.

  3. Now using all but one teammate, take a product photo.
